The IPM's Marion Leonard has returned from giving a keynote address at Nova Scotia Music Week. Each year this Canadian music festival and conference draws approximately 6,000 music fans and 1,000 music industry professionals to a range of events including an international buyers programme, export training, a music business training track, and showcases of established and emerging artists. This year a strand of the conference was dedicated to the deeper issues which inform and structure work within the industries and impact on how music gets selected, promoted, championed and heard in the wider world. Marion’s keynote address discussed how ideas about gender become a foundation for inequality in the music industries. She examined how gender influences the way in which artists are promoted and valorized, and informs the experience of participating in different areas of work within the music sector. She also contributed to a panel discussion on women in music featuring musicians and academics.
